Thank you for your interest in the 11th annual Richmond Diversity Dialogue Day (DDD)! The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities has proudly conducted this program for high school students in Richmond for over a decade, and this year we’re going virtual!

The 2020 Richmond Diversity Dialogue Day program is scheduled to be held online on Tuesday, December 1 and Wednesday, December 2 from 10:00 am–2:00 pm, and schools are only expected to attend on one day of their choice. At the moment, we are planning to use Zoom as the platform. If your school is not able to use Zoom but you would like to participate, please let us know as soon as possible.

Diversity Dialogue Day will bring together  high school students from public and private schools throughout the Richmond area. Students will learn to recognize prejudice and intolerance, and to respect others. They will work closely with their peers from a wide range of ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Students will leave the program with tools they can use to create school and community environments free from the distractions of prejudice, stereotypes, and bigotry.

Thanks to support from Dominion Energy, there is no cost for your school to attend! We are asking that schools indicate their interest and nominate student participants by Friday, October 30.

Please read the Frequently Asked Questions below. If you have any additional questions or would like more details about this program, please contact VCIC’s Educational Programs Coordinator Tally Botzer at tbotzer@inclusiveVA.org. We hope to “see” you on December 1st or 2nd!

What will my students do at the Summit?

    • Sessions are designed to take participants through a process of awareness-to-action. VCIC will send an hour-long video for students to watch the morning of the day of their session, and then students will engage in synchronous conversations with their peers on the day of the program about ways to recognize prejudice and respect others. Trained facilitators will guide the students through small group learning activities that explore personal experiences with discrimination and develop conflict resolution skills.

What do I need to share with my students about participating?

    • You will need to share which date your school will attend (December 1st or 2nd). VCIC will share a link with you to distribute to registered students only. Students are asked to watch a video the morning of DDD, prior to the live sessions at 10 AM. Students are expected to be present with cameras on for the entire day and asked to adhere to dress codes and virtual learning standards set forth by their school districts. A scheduled 30-minute lunch break and stretch breaks are built into this time frame.

What is my role during the Summit?

    • We ask that an educator be available to support their students on the day of the session. In addition, we invite you to join our educator-only session, which will take place at a later date. This session will review the concepts that students discussed and offer some practical tips on ways to support them as they combat prejudice. There will be some time for networking, too! Whether or not you are able to attend that session, you will be signed up for VCIC’s monthly “Building Inclusive Schools” e-newsletter to educators featuring curriculum ideas, funding sources, best practices, etc.

How can I register?

    • Click here to register your school. You can register up to five students from your school, and choose whether your school will attend the program on either December 1st or 2nd. Once school registration is complete, an additional link will be sent to you to be sent to the parents/guardians of your registered students. School placement for each date is granted on a first come, first served basis until capacity is reached. School registration is due by Friday, October 30th.
