Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the inaugural Tidewater Prejudice Awareness Summit, scheduled for October 28 and October 29, 2020!
This program has been held in other regions in Virginia since 2001, and is designed to bring approximately 100 middle school students from across a geographic area to discuss ways to combat prejudice in their schools. You can find a report from last year’s programs held in Richmond and Lynchburg here.
Thanks to support from Buckingham Strategic Wealth, this program is offered for free to local schools in South Hampton Roads! PAS, which was founded by Jewish Women International, is conducted by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities. Coalition partners for the 2020 PAS are Communities In Schools of Hampton Roads; Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast; Jewish Community Relations Council, United Jewish Federation of Tidewater; Old Dominion University Office of Institutional Equity and Diversity; and YWCA South Hampton Roads.
While at PAS, groups of 12-15 middle school students experience workshops facilitated by co-facilitator teams made up of two community facilitator-volunteers. Facilitators come from a variety of backgrounds and professions, all with a shared interest in working with young people to promote inclusion and respect.
As a volunteer, you will be asked to commit to co-leading a small group of students through their virtual sessions on either October 28 or October 29 from 9:30am-2:30pm. There will be scheduled breaks for stretching and for lunch during these times. Regardless of which date you choose, facilitators are also required to attend a mandatory Facilitator Orientation on Thursday, October 22 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm. A Zoom link will be sent in advance of this session.
Please complete the application (found in the How to Apply section) by October 9. Once you are registered, you will receive the link to attend the training session on October 22.
If you have any questions, please contact VCIC’s Hampton Roads Program Manager Paula L. Bazemore by phone at (757) 390-0720 or by email at pbazemore@inclusiveVA.org.
We look forward to the chance to work with you!
