PAS Tidewater – School Registration

[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_toggle title=”Introduction” open=”true” icon=”up-open” icon_closed=”down-open”]Thank you for your interest in the Tidewater Prejudice Awareness Summit (PAS)! The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities has conducted this program for middle school students in Virginia for nearly 20 years.  We will be virtual this year.

The program is scheduled to be held online on Thursday, February 17 from 10:00 am–2:00 pm. At the moment, we are planning to use Zoom as the platform. If your school is not able to use Zoom but you would like to participate, please let us know as soon as possible.

The program is designed to bring approximately 50 middle school students from across a geographic area to discuss ways to combat prejudice in their schools. You can find a report from previous programs held in Richmond and Lynchburg here.

Thanks to support from Atlantic Union Bank, there is no cost for your school to attend! We are asking that schools indicate their interest and nominate student participants by February 1, 2022.

The PAS program was founded by Jewish Women International.

Please read the Frequently Asked Questions below. If you have any additional questions or would like more details about this program, please contact VCIC’s Educational Programs Associate Emma Cox by email at [email protected]. We hope to “see” you on February 17 ![/vc_toggle][vc_toggle title=”Frequently Asked Questions” open=”true” icon=”up-open” icon_closed=”down-open”]What will my students do at the Summit?

    • Sessions are designed to take participants through a process of awareness-to-action. VCIC will send a 25-minute video for students to watch the morning of the day of their session, and then students will engage in synchronous conversations with their peers on the day of the program about ways to recognize prejudice and respect others. Trained facilitators will guide the students through small group learning activities that explore personal experiences with discrimination and develop conflict resolution skills.

What do I need to share with my students about participating?

    • VCIC will share a link with you to distribute to registered students only. Students are asked to watch a video the morning of the Summit, prior to the live sessions at 10 AM. Students are expected to be present with cameras on for the entire Summit and asked to adhere to dress codes and virtual learning standards set forth by their school districts. A scheduled 30- minute lunch break and stretch breaks are built into this time frame.

What is my role during the Summit?

    • We have found that this day is much more impactful when educators are engaged, also. Therefore, we recommend that you join our educator-only session that will run concurrently to the student session. During this workshop, educators will review the concepts that students are discussing and will be given some practical tips on ways to support them as they combat prejudice. There will be some time for networking, too! All educators will be signed up for VCIC’s monthly “Building Inclusive Schools” e-newsletter to educators featuring curriculum ideas, funding sources, best practices, etc.

How can I register?

    • Click here to register your school. You can register up to ten students from your school. Once school registration is complete, an additional link will be sent to you to be sent to the parents/guardians of your registered students. School registration is due by February 1.

Is there opportunity for follow-up?

    • Thanks to generous support from Atlantic Union Bank, VCIC is able to offer two options for follow-up. You can apply for a mini-grant for follow-up sessions with VCIC or funding to support your students’ continued work. You can apply for either of these when you register your school. After you indicate interest, VCIC will send you an application link. You will be notified of the award after the program.
