Lynchburg Chapter Awards
The 58th Lynchburg Humanitarian Awards Dinner takes place on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
Under the leadership of Dinner Chair L. Kimball Payne, the following individuals will be honored:

The Humanitarian Award of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities is presented to those individuals who have demonstrated a personal commitment to the promotion of respect and understanding among people of diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. On occasion, the organization may bestow the Jeffrey B. Spence Award for Interfaith Understanding to individuals who have conducted exceptional work in the area of interfaith understanding. The Distinguished Merit Award recognizes corporations or community organizations for their humanitarian work.

Anthony Bonds

Anthony Bonds has built a distinguished career with Smyth Companies LLC for over 55 years, beginning in 1971 on the printing presses and advancing into leadership roles including Pressroom Supervisor, Quality Manager, Color Manager, and Innovations and Research and Development Manager, where he oversaw testing, innovation, and quality improvements in Virginia and Minnesota. Anthony has also served as a pastor for more than 25 years. He became Pastor of Haven of Rest Church in Bedford in 2001 and has also led New Design Church in Rocky Mount since 2012. His service is deeply hands-on, frequently assisting youth and seniors with transportation, home repairs, mechanical support, and counseling. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Anthony’s life reflects an enduring commitment to faith, family, leadership, and community service.

Kathleen Davis

Kathleen Davis is a community builder whose work centers on connection, creativity, engagement, belonging, and access. She is a co-founder of The Lavender Lodge, a member-based community space in Lynchburg created to provide a safe, welcoming environment for LGBTQ individuals. What began as a simple gathering place has grown into a vibrant community of more than 500 members, offering regular social and creative events that foster connection and joy. Professionally, Kathleen serves as Director of Business Development at Lifepoint Health for Centra’s behavioral health hospital, where she leads outreach and partnerships to expand access to mental healthcare across the region. Her civic leadership includes board service with Beacon of Hope and the Downtown Lynchburg Association. She was named the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance Young Professional of the Year in 2021.

Ghislaine L. Lewis

Dr. Ghislaine L. Lewis is a scholar-leader who serves as Associate Professor of Communication Studies at the University of Lynchburg. Originally from the Caribbean, she brings a global perspective to Central Virginia through teaching and mentoring in communication studies and nonprofit leadership. Her community leadership includes serving as the inaugural Executive Director of the Pierce Street Gateway, where she advanced neighborhood preservation and sustainable partnerships. Ghislaine is also active with the Legacy Museum of African American History, Susie Gibson Legacy Inc., the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, and The Link Project. She has also advised regional initiatives addressing health equity. Her work has earned her numerous commendations, including the 2026 YWCA Woman of Distinction Igniting Equity Award and the University of Lynchburg’s Elsie Ervin Bock Citizenship Award.

Charles B. White

Charles B. “Charlie” White serves as Executive Vice President and board Secretary of Pettyjohn, Wood & White, Inc., an investment management firm in Lynchburg. A graduate of the College of William and Mary and a Chartered Financial Analyst, Charlie is a lifelong Lynchburg resident with deep ties to the community. He has dedicated decades to local organizations, serving on the boards of Lynchburg City Schools, Randolph College, the University of Lynchburg, the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation, the Centra Foundation, and numerous youth-focused nonprofits. Charlie considers his most meaningful contributions to be his hands-on involvement with youth and high school athletics, including coaching, mentoring, fundraising, and student support initiatives in Lynchburg City Schools. A proud E.C. Glass High School graduate, he is a longtime member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
