Thank you for your interest in the 13th annual Tidewater Diversity Dialogue Day (DDD)! The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities has proudly conducted this program for high school students in Tidewater for over a decade, and this will be our second year of virtual programming.

The 2022 Tidewater Diversity Dialogue Day program is scheduled to be held online on Wednesday, March 16 from 10:00 am–2:00 pm. At the moment, we are planning to use Zoom as the platform. If your school is not able to use Zoom but you would like to participate, please let us know as soon as possible.

Diversity Dialogue Day will bring together high school students from public and private schools throughout South Hampton Roads. Students will learn to recognize prejudice and intolerance, and to respect others. They will work closely with their peers from a wide range of ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Students will leave the program with tools they can use to create school and community environments free from the distractions of prejudice, stereotypes, and bigotry. This year’s content and theme are unchanged from our virtual program in 2020-2021. In order to increase your school’s capacity to combat bias, it is strongly recommended that schools bring students who did not attend last year’s virtual program.

Thanks to support from Dominion Energy, there is no cost for your school to attend! We are asking that schools indicate their interest and nominate student participants by Friday, February 18.

Please read the Frequently Asked Questions below. If you have any additional questions or would like more details about this program, please contact VCIC’s Educational Programs Associate Emma Cox by email at ecox@inclusiveVA.org.  We hope to “see” you on March 16th!

What will my students do at DDD?

    • Sessions are designed to take participants through a process of awareness-to-action. VCIC will send a 35-minute video for students to watch the morning of the day of their session, and then students will engage in synchronous conversations with their peers on the day of the program about ways to recognize prejudice and respect others. Trained facilitators will guide the students through small group learning activities that explore personal experiences with discrimination and develop conflict resolution skills.

What do I need to share with my students about participating?

    • VCIC will share a link with you to distribute to registered students only. Students are asked to watch a video the morning of the program, prior to the live sessions at 10 AM. Students are expected to be present with cameras on for the entire program and asked to adhere to dress codes and virtual learning standards set forth by their school districts. A scheduled 30- minute lunch break and stretch breaks are built into this time frame.

What is my role during DDD?

    • We have found that this day is much more impactful when educators are engaged, also. Therefore, we recommend that you join our educator-only session that will run concurrently to the student session. During this workshop, educators will review the concepts that students are discussing and will be given some practical tips on ways to support them as they combat prejudice. There will be some time for networking, too! All educators will be signed up for VCIC’s monthly “Building Inclusive Schools” e-newsletter to educators featuring curriculum ideas, funding sources, best practices, etc.

How can I register?

    • Click here to register your school. You can register up to 15 students from your school. Once school registration is complete, an additional link will be sent to you to be sent to the parents/guardians of your registered students. School placement is granted on a first come, first served basis until capacity is reached. School registration is due by Monday, February 7.
